Biking across the Alps!

Miscellaneous

  • As the amount of clothes you are bringing is limited by the weight you can carry with you (remember to keep it below 7 kg), be prepared to wash your bike outfit in the night. Hopefully it will dry by the next day, otherwise use the second change and keep the wet one in a plastic bag. However, try to dry it as soon as you stop for brakes, wet clothes are heavier to carry and might get mouldy.
  • Riding downhill, it might be good to lower your saddle a bit. This way the bike will become easier to control. If you are using v-brakes and are extensively using them for a prolonged time, stop to cool down the rims, as the excessive heat might explode the tube. No worries for disc brakes.
  • Riding uphill, try to keep a constant rhythm and keep the number of stops down. If your quadriceps become sore, try to ride standing up in order to use other muscles.
Tip: if the ascent is too steep, get off the bike and push it, it's easier and at the same time you exercise other muscles.
  • Riding on flat surfaces, make sure you ride behind your buddy by exchanging position in front from time to time. If along your route you find a way to gain height by taking a lift, or cable car, do not be afraid to use them. You will save some energy for other climbs and enjoy a relaxed downhill ride.
  • At least 5 minutes of stretching when you stop for a brake and 30 minutes when you stop for the night.
